The FiiO SnowSky Disc was officially launched today (26) in China. It is a compact Digital Audio Player (DAP) with a design that resembles a CD player. Its round touchscreen was intentionally created to evoke the look of a Compact Disc (CD).

A compact and slim DAP designed to be attached to the back of a smartphone

The SnowSky Disc is a Digital Audio Player (DAP) that not only offers smooth navigation through FiiO’s proprietary Linux-based operating system, but also brings convenience for users looking for a device to listen to music on smartphones without a headphone jack. Below is an example photo taken by James Chung, FiiO’s CEO and founder.

When attaching the Disc DAP to the back of the smartphone, you have two options: listen to music stored on the microSD card inserted in the Digital Audio Player, or connect the DAP to the phone via USB cable to play tracks from streaming services such as Spotify, YouTube Music, Apple Music, or Tidal, for example.

Roon support for playback control

The Disc allows the user to control music playback through Roon software. This way, commands can be issued from a smartphone, tablet, or PC without the need to connect a USB cable to the DAP. By installing the Roon app, the user can browse, listen, and control music playback across all supported devices.

Output power sufficient for most portable headphones

With an output power of 280 mW from the 4.4 mm balanced headphone output, the Disc is capable of driving most portable headphones, including in-ear monitors (IEMs), earbuds, and on-ear models. At the same time, since it is a DAP with an internal battery, you won’t face the issue of draining your smartphone’s power when connecting via USB to listen to streaming apps.

There are also two gain levels to provide better volume control per step, which is especially helpful for headphones with high sensitivity and low impedance.

Large storage capacity for music

The Disc supports microSD cards up to 2 TB, offering large storage capacity for music files such as MP3 or FLAC. In addition, according to FiiO, this DAP is capable of scanning 5,000 tracks in just 30 seconds.

Firmware updates via Wi-Fi

Thanks to the Disc’s Wi-Fi connectivity, firmware updates can be installed via OTA. This eliminates the need to download the file on a PC and copy it to the microSD card, as is the case with the Echo Mini.

Buttons and gesture controls

Navigation through menus and music albums appears to be smooth on the SnowSky Disc through the use of gesture shortcuts combined with multifunction physical buttons. Below is an image illustrating how some of these commands are performed.
