From Smartphone to a Portable Music Player (DAP): How to Choose Your First One

Portable Music Players (DAPs or Digital Audio Players) can be an interesting solution for those seeking a device dedicated to music playback capable of delivering not only higher sound quality but also a more immersive experience with the works of bands, orchestras, and musicians. With this in mind, this article explains how to make the best choice when purchasing a first Portable Music Player (DAP).

How to Choose Your First Portable Music Player (DAP or Digital Audio Player)

Before explaining how to choose a Portable Music Player (DAP or Digital Audio Player), I believe it is important to introduce the characteristics that I consider unique to this type of device, as this will facilitate understanding of the concepts discussed later.

Currently, it is not difficult to find a Portable Music Player (DAP or Digital Audio Player) with sound quality superior to that of a smartphone. This is due to advancements in both hardware and software optimization in DAPs, as discussed in the article “The evolution of chipsets and Android optimization in DAPs.”

To enable the use of multiple physical buttons dedicated to music control, as well as multiple microSD card slots, Digital Audio Players still adopt a System on Chip (SoC) different from those used in smartphones. As explained in the article “FiiO and the Memory Chip Shortage,” DAPs employ chipsets designed for IoT (Internet of Things) applications, as these allow the implementation of additional features within the devices.

In my opinion, one of the main highlights of the physical controls found on DAPs is the volume button, since some models include a knob (rotary control) that provides a distinct tactile experience when adjusting playback volume. I also value the presence of a dedicated play/pause button along with separate buttons for track forward and backward navigation.

Software optimization in Digital Audio Players results in lower resource consumption (RAM, CPU, and GPU) compared to smartphones, while also enabling features such as USB DAC mode and multiple gain levels to regulate output power. However, the higher the output power of a DAP, the lower its energy efficiency becomes, due to the increased power consumption generated by the amplifiers integrated into the motherboard.

When a Portable Music Player exhibits low energy efficiency, the manufacturer typically has no alternative but to implement a higher-capacity battery. Consequently, the device’s size and weight increase, making it less portable.

Based on my experience, the primary factors contributing to battery consumption are Wi-Fi usage combined with balanced output operation (when available) under high gain settings, which unlock the Digital Audio Player’s maximum output power.

If maximum battery life is your priority, choose DAPs without music streaming capabilities—that is, models without Wi-Fi connectivity. Additionally, consider devices that offer only a 3.5 mm single-ended (SE) output, as these typically provide lower output power and therefore consume less energy. The lightest and most compact Portable Music Players usually share these characteristics, since they do not require high-capacity batteries.

Finally, I would like to add that I do not recommend using Portable Music Players (DAPs or Digital Audio Players) with high-impedance, low-sensitivity over-ear headphones. In such cases, using a desktop DAC and amplifier is more appropriate, as these systems have greater potential to deliver optimal sound quality for over-ear headphones. DAPs are better suited for portable headphones such as flathead earbuds, on-ear headphones, and in-ear monitors.

Portable M usic Players (DAPs or Digital Audio Players) for Gym Workouts, Running, and Walking

For gym workouts, running, and walking, I recommend Portable Music Player models that are compact and lightweight, as well as capable of Bluetooth connectivity. Due to constant movement, carrying bulky or heavy objects can become uncomfortable. Additionally, cables may cause accidents or interfere with exercise execution.

The Portable Music Players (DAPs) recommended for this purpose are those classified as “lightweight” and “ultra-lightweight” in my article “Best Compact and Lightweight DAPs in 2026: Top Picks.” Lightweight models typically weigh between approximately 130 g and 150 g, while ultra-lightweight models range from 30 g to 100 g. I also recommend choosing devices no thicker than 1.4 cm.

For running and walking, I recommend only models classified as ultra-lightweight to maximize comfort. For gym workouts, both lightweight and ultra-lightweight DAPs are suitable.
