Buying microSD cards for use with DAPs (Digital Audio Players) in 2026 can be a difficult task. According to a report published by the Korea JoongAng Daily in early August, NAND flash memory prices have risen sharply. NAND flash memory is used in microSD cards. The best microSD card for your DAP is not the fastest one

Before we begin with our microSD card recommendations for DAPs (Digital Audio Players), it is important to understand the read and write speed requirements of “MP3 players.”

Since a DAP is a device dedicated to music playback, you do not need microSD cards with high read and write speeds. To illustrate this, 24-bit/192kHz stereo PCM, before being encoded as FLAC, has a bitrate of 9,216kbps (or 9.216Mbps). In practice, this corresponds to a data rate of 1.152MB/s.

Note: The bitrate of an audio file is expressed in bits, whereas memory card speeds are expressed in bytes. Each byte consists of 8 bits. Therefore, dividing 9.216Mbps by eight results in 1.152MB/s.

When playing music on a DAP, most operations performed on the microSD card are read operations. Currently, microSD cards rated Class 10, U1, or U3 typically offer read speeds of at least 100MB/s. However, these classifications refer to write speed. Class 10 and U1 microSD cards guarantee a minimum write speed of 10MB/s, while U3-rated cards guarantee a minimum write speed of 30MB/s.

DSD music still does not require faster microSD cards

Even if you have DSD files, you still do not need a microSD card with high read and write speeds. A DSD512 track has a bitrate of approximately 45.16Mbps and requires a read data rate of approximately 5.65MB/s. Therefore, a Class 10 or U1 microSD card already provides sufficient performance.

A1-rated microSD cards ensure good performance

A1-rated microSD cards have additional performance requirements compared with the classifications mentioned above. This certification guarantees a minimum of 1,500 random read IOPS and 500 random write IOPS, in addition to 10MB/s of sequential write performance. Current A1 microSD card models typically offer read speeds of at least 100MB/s.

The recommendations for which microSD cards to buy for DAPs in 2026 were based on the latest models capable of achieving read and write speeds of at least 10MB/s. Accordingly, only models suitable for offline music playback or music streaming were considered. The use of video apps on Digital Audio Players, for example, was not taken into account.
