FiiO RR13 Portable Radio (Image: FiiO Wilson)
The FiiO RR13 was launched today (June 16) in mainland China. FiiO’s new portable radio features built-in speakers, a replaceable battery, and a telescopic antenna that connects via the 3.5 mm headphone output. The RR13 also incorporates an internal antenna, allowing users to listen to radio broadcasts while using In-Ear Monitors (IEMs) and flathead earbuds. Check out the details below on the latest addition to FiiO’s retro product lineup.
Update (June 26): The FiiO RR13 is now available through FiiO’s official AliExpress store.
The true portable radio many FiiO enthusiasts have been waiting for has finally arrived. The RR13 features built-in speakers, a replaceable battery, a telescopic antenna, and a luminous tuning pointer for nighttime use. In addition, its chassis is constructed from aluminum alloy and features an AG (anti-glare) glass rear panel.

When the FiiO RR11 was released, many portable radio enthusiasts felt the absence of built-in speakers. While listening through headphones provides an enjoyable experience, a speaker-equipped radio remains important for users who have listened to radio broadcasts that way for many years. With the RR13, FiiO has addressed this demand by delivering a more complete product.

To accommodate speakers within such a compact chassis, FiiO equipped the RR13 with a pair of ultra-thin five-magnet speakers. Furthermore, two independent amplifiers have been integrated to ensure improved sound quality.
One feature that radio enthusiasts missed on the RR11 was the ability to easily replace the battery. Fortunately, FiiO has implemented a protected 450 mAh 10440 battery in the RR13.
The replaceable battery used in the RR13 is a customized version of the standard 10440 cell. As a result, users must contact FiiO customer support to purchase replacement batteries separately.

The FiiO RR13 incorporates two antennas: an internal antenna for headphone listening and an external antenna for speaker operation. This does not mean signal reception will be weaker when using IEMs or earbuds, as the headphone cable functions as an antenna in this scenario.
The telescopic antenna connects through the 3.5 mm headphone output and can be removed when headphones are used instead of the built-in speakers. In areas with poor reception, the antenna can be extended to improve radio signal capture.

To make the tuned frequency easier to see at night, FiiO implemented a luminous mechanical tuning pointer on the RR13. According to the company, the pointer’s design was inspired by high-end mechanical watches.

Battery life on the RR13 varies depending on how the device is used.
The RR13 can function as a headphone amplifier when connected to a smartphone or PC via a USB DAC cable. In this mode, the battery provides up to 18 hours of continuous playback when using headphones. When the built-in speakers are used, battery life drops to approximately four hours.
When operating as an FM radio using its internal battery, the RR13 provides up to seven hours of playback with headphones. Using the built-in speakers reduces runtime to approximately four hours. For comparison, the RR11 offers 8.5 hours of playback with headphones and up to 17.5 hours when operating in amplifier mode.
Powered by the Skyworks Solutions Silicon Labs Si4831 receiver chip, the RR13 supports FM reception across both the international FM band and the Japanese FM band. Users can therefore tune FM stations from 87 MHz to 108 MHz (international band) as well as from 76 MHz to 90 MHz (Japanese band).
The RR13 employs a system consisting of rollers, gears, and racks to facilitate precise tuning and frequency locking. According to FiiO, this design enables smoother and more accurate movement while searching for radio stations.

The RR13’s 3.5 mm single-ended (SE) output delivers 80 mW at 32 ohms, twice the output power provided by the RR11 (40 mW).
