Snowsky Echo Mini gets 512MB version as memory prices soar

Introduced today (June 29) in mainland China, the Snowsky Echo Mini is now available in a new, lower-cost variant. The announcement comes less than a week after Snowsky unveiled the 4GB version of the Snowsky Echo (non-Mini). Below, we explain why the company has decided to release an Echo Mini with only 512MB of internal storage.

Echo Mini now available with just 512MB of storage

At first, I believed the purpose of launching the 4GB version of the Echo (non-Mini) was simply to introduce a more affordable Digital Audio Player (DAP). However, with the release of the 512MB Echo Mini, it became clear that this was not the primary motivation behind the company’s strategy.

The reason behind the new Echo and Echo Mini variants

Shortly after Snowsky announced the 512MB Echo Mini, Kang, the product manager responsible for FiiO’s Echo DAP lineup, stated the following on Chinese social media:

“If you need the 8GB version, there is still a limited amount of inventory available on the market, so be sure to purchase one while supplies last.”

Based on this statement, it is evident that Snowsky, FiiO’s sub-brand, intends to gradually replace the 8GB Echo Mini with the 512MB version. At this point, you may be wondering: Why would the company do that?

To provide additional context, FiiO founder and CEO James Chung explained:

“Based on the information we have received directly from the supply chain, there is still no indication that prices for key materials, including chips, electronic components, and printed circuit boards (PCBs), are stabilizing, let alone declining.”

In the same post, James specifically addressed the memory market:

“At the moment, memory is the component that has experienced the steepest price increase, with costs rising severalfold.”

Does reducing the storage capacity affect the Echo Mini user experience?

No. According to Kang, the product manager responsible for the Echo DAP lineup, reducing the Echo Mini’s internal storage capacity will not affect the user experience.

Kang explained:

“Most users store their music on a microSD (TF) card, so reducing the internal storage to 512MB has virtually no impact on the overall user experience.”

What is the difference between the original Echo Mini and the 512MB version?

The only difference between the original Echo Mini and the new 512MB variant is the internal storage capacity. All other internal and external hardware specifications remain unchanged.

In its official announcement, Snowsky stated:

“Compared to the original 8GB version, the only difference is the internal storage capacity. All other specifications remain exactly the same. The current version will continue to be sold as usual.”

How much does the Echo Mini cost?

The 8GB Snowsky Echo Mini debuted in mainland China for 300 yuan (approximately US$44.16). The new 512MB version is priced at 279 yuan (approximately US$41.07), representing a price difference of only 7%.

This pricing strategy closely mirrors that of the 4GB Snowsky Echo, which costs only 5% less than the 8GB model.

Snowsky’s apparent objective is to keep the retail prices of both the Echo Mini and the Echo relatively stable despite the sharp increase in memory costs. My interpretation is that the company sourced lower-capacity memory chips, which are less expensive, allowing it to introduce new variants while maintaining prices close to those of the original models.
