Moondrop presented the final version of the Darkside during the 20th Shenzhen International Audio Show (SIAS 2026). Last year, the company unveiled a prototype of the Darkside, but an additional year of refinement was required to achieve a result that satisfied its developers.
According to the manufacturer, no compromises were made in terms of materials or prototype development costs. The company sought to explore every possible approach to improving the performance of the Darkside’s planar magnetic driver technology. Below, you can find all the details about the new planar magnetic headphones that Moondrop plans to launch soon.
Developed without budget constraints, the Moondrop Darkside represents the pinnacle of what the manufacturer has been able to achieve in a planar magnetic headphone.
The Darkside prototype was unveiled during SIAS 2025. Now, at SIAS 2026, Moondrop has announced the final version of its flagship planar magnetic headphone. Below, you can find more information about the driver, construction, sound, price, and expected release date.

The Moondrop Darkside’s driver uses a 500 nm diaphragm with circuitry etched in pure gold. To drive this thin film, an array of bar-shaped N55 neodymium magnets is used. Below is a photo showing the exposed planar magnetic driver.

Like the MOONZERO, the Darkside’s headband uses carbon fiber for its main structure and 3D printing for the head-support strap. Below is a photo showing its construction.

Another similarity to the MOONZERO is the Darkside’s ear pads, which are made of lambskin leather and provide a good level of comfort. The use of this type of material is also advantageous in terms of durability, as it can last for many years when properly cared for.

The cables used with the Moondrop Darkside are detachable, allowing them to be replaced in the event of connection issues or simply swapped for a model from another manufacturer.

Several SIAS 2026 attendees shared their impressions of the Moondrop Darkside’s sound on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, as the headphone was available for listening tests at the event.
According to one SIAS 2026 attendee, the Darkside represents an evolution of the Moondrop SKYLAND, also known as “Laputa.”
“The Darkside represents an evolution over the SKYLAND, delivering a greater sense of scale and more luxuriant instrumental timbres.”

Another attendee at this year’s SIAS said that the Darkside departs from the clearer, brighter sound commonly associated with planar magnetic headphones. I believe the attendee was referring to models sold by HiFiMAN. Below is the attendee’s full assessment of the Darkside’s sound.
“In terms of sound, it does not exhibit the clearer, brighter character stereotypically associated with planar headphones. On the contrary, it has substantial tonal weight, along with an appropriate amount of bass and good bass texture.
The sound is richly layered, with instruments and other sonic elements rendered with considerable body, while the treble retains the transient-response advantages of planar drivers.
Overall, the bass, midrange, and treble are well balanced, while the presentation remains highly musical, resulting in a flagship planar headphone that seeks to combine technical performance with an engaging listening experience.”
Moondrop has not yet disclosed the Darkside’s specifications. This article will be updated once the specifications become available.
The Moondrop Darkside will be launched in mainland China later this August for 19,999 yuan (approximately US$2,975). Pricing and a release date for the international market have not yet been announced. This article will be updated as soon as additional information becomes available.
