Audio-Technica today (13) launched two new earplugs, the ATH-ERP3 and the ATH-ERP5. These devices assist in reducing noise in loud environments and provide hearing protection during live concerts. As a result, users can enjoy live music more safely, sleep better, or focus on studying, for example.

What to know before buying earplugs

Before discussing the new releases, it is important to clarify what earplugs are, why their use is beneficial, and in which scenarios they are most useful.

What are earplugs?

Earplugs are accessories designed to attenuate loud noise in order to preserve the user’s hearing. They have a form factor similar to that of earphones, but their internal construction is different.

The design of earplugs is intended to reduce environmental noise either passively or through specialized acoustic filtering. The primary objective is to prevent hearing loss in the user. However, hearing damage can occur either rapidly or gradually, which underscores the importance of using hearing protection devices such as earplugs.

Why use earplugs?

The use of earplugs is important for preventing rapid deterioration of hearing capacity. Environments such as live concerts, parties with high sound levels, and construction sites are examples of scenarios in which hearing can be harmed.

When individuals are exposed to high noise levels for periods exceeding those recommended by Annex No. 1 of Brazilian Regulatory Standard (NR) 15, irreversible damage to hearing ability may occur.

Audio-Technica AT-ERP3 and AT-ERP5 earplugs

The traditional Japanese manufacturer of headphones, microphones, and turntables, Audio-Technica, is introducing two new earplugs: the AT-ERP3 and the AT-ERP5. Certified according to EN (European Norm) and ANSI (American National Standards Institute) standards, these earplugs can be used as personal protective equipment (PPE) for hearing protection.

Audio-Technica stated the following in its announcement regarding the launch of its earplugs:

“For many years, the company has been dedicated to developing audio equipment that meets the needs of both professionals and general users. Based on its accumulated acoustic technology and expertise in earphone design, Audio-Technica developed these earplugs with the goal of looking toward the future of the listening experience. As ear-care products that support hearing health, they propose a new value for hearing protection.”

Advantages compared to models from other brands

In my opinion, the major advantages of Audio-Technica earplugs compared to models from other brands are threefold:

  • Discreet appearance
  • Compact design
  • Ear fins for improved stability within the outer ear

The discreet appearance of these earplugs is particularly important in scenarios where users are outside their homes. Examples include live concerts and various types of social events. Many individuals prefer to avoid drawing attention to the hearing protection accessories they are using.

The compact design contributes to comfort when lying down on a pillow. For instance, after returning home tired from a party, users can lie down without discomfort while wearing the earplugs.

The ear fins, also known as wingtips, provide a more secure fit. With a firm insertion, the earplugs are unlikely to fall out of the ears.

Differences between the AT-ERP3 and AT-ERP5

The AT-ERP3 and AT-ERP5 differ internally, although they are similar in their external appearance.

The AT-ERP3 was designed to maximize noise reduction in environments such as busy streets, cafés, offices, or while traveling on public transportation. Its ear tips feature a sealed acoustic channel to efficiently attenuate environmental noise.

The AT-ERP5, in contrast, was developed to attenuate sound levels without degrading the audio quality of live concerts, classical performances, or other large events. The primary objective of its design is to allow users to enjoy concerts at safer sound levels while preserving sound clarity.

For this purpose, the AT-ERP5 incorporates a dual-layer filtering damper system and ear tips optimized for music listening. As a result, the model functions as specialized earplugs for concerts, offering effective hearing protection while maintaining the fidelity of live music.

Features shared by both models

Both the AT-ERP3 and the AT-ERP5 include compact storage and transport cases.

Another positive feature present in both models is the removable ear tips. These can be washed whenever dirt, skin oils, or earwax accumulate, helping maintain hygiene and prolong product longevity.
